We’ve talked about how 3D printing can help people that need custom or cheaper prosthetics, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg as 3D printing can assist people with all sorts of disabilities. Blindness affects millions around the world, and a London-based company has just launched a new phone with customizable 3D printed buttons.

The OwnFone Braille is the name of the upcoming gadget and while its innards aren’t made from 3D printers, its front and back are as it allows the company to customize each device while cutting back on costs. Each phone can have two or four braille buttons that will be pre-programmed by the company for the customer when you order.

The braille buttons will allow someone who’s blind to call friends, family or emergency services with the press of a button and if the person can’t read braille, the company can print textured or raised text on the keypad. The customer can pick and choose their options through the company’s website, and a 3D printer takes care of the rest.

OwnFone is the name of the company behind the OwnFone Braille and it’s not their first foray into the world of mobiles. They’ve already produced a simple phone for children with the 1stfone and one geared towards seniors. The OwnFone Braille will only be available in the UK at launch and is priced at £60.
